Heritage High School’s DECA program sponsored the sixth annual Mr. Eagle competition on April 11, 2014, to raise money for various charities, including Alexander’s Angels. A non-profit organization based out of Jericho, New York, Alexander’s Angels raises money for advocacy, service and research for individuals with Downs Syndrome. The organization was chosen among 25 non-profits as part of a Ms. Barb Bolen’s marketing class project on non-profits.
Twelve senior boys were selected by their peers to compete in the Mr. Eagle event. The evening began with an opening dance, choreographed by the Heritage Belles, and included a talent portion, an evening wear display and a question and answer section. Tuxes for the Formal Wear portion of the event were donated by Men’s Wearhouse and the Arapahoe Credit Union was a sponsor for the event.
Heritage teachers and staff members were selected to be judges at this event and graded the boys on areas such as creativity, entertainment, showmanship, confidence, and originality in each category. The contestants helped to raise additional funds by carrying around “money buckets” in school and students and staff generously donated to the cause. Michael Egeberg, one of the contestants in Mr. Eagle, singlehandedly collected over $300 and was named Mr. Moneymaker that evening, receiving a special prize.
At the end of the event, Hunter Lee was crowned Mr. Eagle 2014, receiving a cash prize and a plaque which remains in the school. Hunter will be donating his cash prize to the Soweto Academy in Kenya. Other contestants included CJ Amman, Joe Brady, Seth Deeter, Alec Fleisher, Matt Lee, Kristopher Medina, Ben Merrill, Dan Tabor, Cooper Solich and Skyler Williamson.
The successful event will continue to remain a part of the giving community of Heritage High School.
